The gaming industry, like many others, has its own highs, expressed in the form of successful devices and games, and lows, represented by its failures.

However, some of the gaming industry’s mistakes are not limited to the company that made them.

Here are some mistakes in video game history that affected the whole world.

Make Star Wars Battlefront 2 Pay-to-Win

EA’s decision to implement pay-to-win mechanisms Star Wars Battlefront 2 was the problem that first led governments around the world to take a closer look at in-game microtransactions (although some of them mistook them for gambling).

When the game was first released, players immediately complained about the loot box system that the game had. Sony’s online network is hacked

Sony’s PlayStation Network (PSN) wasn’t always the cool and secure network it is today. In 2011, hackers from the hacktivist group Anonymous attacked the network and stole the personal information of millions of players on PSN. According to Vox, the attack was so bad that it crippled the network for weeks.

Anonymous’ attack was in response to Sony’s lawsuit against an American hacker who attempted to reverse engineer the PlayStation 3 to allow gamers to play third-party games not authorized by Sony.

Sony, which initially concealed the reason for the outage, finally confessed and, according to Eurogamer, sparked public outrage against the company.

This outrage led Sony executives to publicly apologize for their poor handling of the issue and bow to the world at large.

More TV than games for Microsoft

The PlayStation 4 and Xbox One should bring a breath of fresh air to Sony and Microsoft. However, only one of them appealed to audiences better than the other, and that was Sony.

CBR mentioned that in its presentation of Xbox One, Microsoft has the potential to become a living room media center that offers gaming and entertainment at the same time due to its TV integration, according to Kotaku.

However, Xbox fans mistook the presentation, saying that the Xbox was more of a TV than a gaming console. The lack of backwards compatibility on the Xbox One and its always-on DRM has also put off many potential Microsoft customers, opting instead for the PS4, which offers players more freedom, per Complex.
