– Donald Trump created Truth Social to “stand up to the tyranny of big tech,” but the former president’s new social media platform hasn’t got the legs to stand up to hackers. Just hours after Trump unveiled Truth Social and its parent company, Trump Media & Technology Group, on Wednesday, someone broke a private version of the yet-to-be-launched social media site. They went into town, first created a fake “donaldjtrump” account, and then set up more non-real handles under the names Steve Bannon, Mike Pence, and Twitter’s own Jack Dorsey, the company reports New York Times.
From there, the hackers went the scatological route, posting mundane swear words targeting Dorsey, as well as photos of emptied pigs. Taking responsibility for the violation: the notorious hacking collective Anonymous, whose members tell this Times the move was part of their “online war on hatred”. “We had a lot of fun trolling it into the sky,” says one hacker. Mikael Thalen of the Daily Dot spoke to a representative of the group, who told him they found the name of a developer involved in the project and then used the Shodan search engine to dig something.
Not long after that, they found a web domain “that appeared to be running mobile beta for Truth Social”. Thalen himself shown how easy it was to infiltrate the site and present yourself as donaldtrump. Truth Social eventually saw what was happening and took the domain offline. This hack comes just days after Trump’s regular DonaldJTrump.com site was breached, apparently by a Turkish “hacktivist” who embedded a nationalist video of controversial President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, reports Gizmodo.
