The increasing adoption of digital platforms has brought numerous benefits, but at the same time there are also threats in the form of cyber criminals.
With data moving seamlessly from a laptop to a smartphone and desktop, there is a need to raise awareness of the various online threats.
Skynet Softtech – a customer-centric cybersecurity tech startup headquartered in Mumbai – was founded in March 2019 and aims to protect individuals and businesses from ever-evolving cyber threats.
The startup offers a one-stop solution for smartphones and PCs that includes instructions, resources and necessary safety precautions.
In conversation with Your story, Founder Nitish A Desai (Managing Director) and Nikhil S Mahadeshwar (CTO) talked about her journey and different facets of cybersecurity.
Edited excerpts from the interview:
Your story [YS]: What drove you to become a tech entrepreneur?
Nitisch Desai [ND]: I’ve invested a lot in technology. My time in the US exposed me to more nuanced aspects of technology, including cybersecurity.
While there were statistics on individuals and organizations that were victims of cyberattacks and suffered enormous reputational and financial losses, a robust solution was lacking. This deficiency was more evident among the Indian audience.
To fill this void, I envisioned creating a one-stop solution for all cybersecurity needs. An app that will help individuals and organizations find out if there are spy applications installed on their devices and warn the user about data theft as most of us are plugged into their respective cell phones which contain all personal and work related data. .
YS: How did you switch from a family-run company in the construction industry to the cyber security technology segment?
ND: Leaving an established company wasn’t easy, but I was blessed to have my family’s support to make the change and explore the technology world. I wanted to start my own business and create a product where the whole world is the market.
Unlike real estate, where you are limited to a specific area of the market, technology is a field where you can expand your wings and develop a range of products that are essential in today’s world.
For me that was HackShield. I wanted to develop a product that would be the answer to all cybersecurity problems around the world.
YS: What business opportunities do you see for Skynet Softtech in the Indian market?
ND: While cybersecurity and digital privacy used to slowly gain in importance, the COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the whole process. According to the latest statistics, the number of cyberattacks has increased and the number of cybercrimes is growing day by day. Individuals and organizations are falling victim to it every second.
With the current trends in the cybersecurity sector, we need an easy-to-use solution that can block multiple threats at once.
Skynet Softtech is an organization that is not an app-based company for individuals, but also provides all kinds of IT security services for organizations.
There is a lack of knowledge and a certain degree of negligence when it comes to cybersecurity and data protection. A firewall and endpoint security solutions in a company alone do not protect against all types of cyber attacks. Various factors need to be considered in order to protect yourself against cyber attacks and prevent data breach by the server.
We offer services to protect the company from all kinds of cyber attacks. We have expertise in handling cyber attack cases before and after an incident as well as in investigating digital forensics, which is what sets us apart in the traditional market.
YS: What general trends do you see today in the world of cybersecurity around the world?
Nikhil Mahadeshwar [NM]: As the world adapts to the “work from home” culture, cybercrimes such as ransomware attacks and phishing are rapidly increasing.
Many companies have lost millions of dollars recovering from such attacks. Sometimes it’s not just about financial loss, but also about loss of reputation, loss of data, and loss of customer credibility. Financial losses could be made good, but reputational losses cannot be easily made up for. As the market for cloud solutions is thriving, threats related to cloud security are also evolving.
Nowadays, storing data on non-reputable cloud solutions has become a risky business. Social engineering attacks are also increasing.
Since everyone is currently using WiFi, be it home WiFi, office WiFi or public WiFi, the threat remains for everyone. Using vulnerable WiFi results in data leakage and devices can be compromised easily.
Mobile hacking is also one of the biggest cyber threats, whether it’s Android or iOS. The recent Pegasus attack set a benchmark for the spyware industry and scared both iOS and Android users.
Just like Pegasus, there are several other spyware in the world.
YS: How can we as a nation better protect ourselves against different types of cyber threats as India businesses and consumers delve deeper into the digital world?
NM: Here are a few things you can do to protect yourself from cyber threats:
- Guidelines should be on paper and implemented.
- Individuals should take mobile security solutions seriously.
- Desktops and laptops should be protected with security solutions.
- A paid anti-espionage solution should be preferred for security reasons.
- For security reasons, you should always check the WLAN before establishing a connection.
- Organizations should run vulnerability tests on a regular basis and fix the issues, if any.
- Businesses should participate in bug bounty programs so that their network, infrastructure, and products are scanned for vulnerabilities with the help of various bug-hunting hackers.
