20 years ago (2001)

Megan Whalen scored a goal in OT to the Brainerd Girls’ hockey team in the Minn semifinals. Holiday Cup tournament in Blaine by 3-2 on Breck. The Warriors’ other goals were Abby Rehberger’s first goal of the season and Samantha Welle’s eighth goal.

30 years ago (1991)

You couldn’t write a script for that. The Warrior Boys hockey team defeated Vincent Massey High School of Winnipeg 6-2. All goals were scored by a player named Johnson. Brainerd’s Jason Johnson scored four goals, and his twin brother Jerr scored two goals and three assists. Darrell Johnson scored the two goals for Vincent Massey.

40 years ago (1981)

A strong Swedish team, defending champions at the World Junior Hockey Tournament, struggled to find their way around before they beat winless West Germany 6-2 in front of an estimated 1,100 fans at the Brainerd Civic Center. The Swedes followed yesterday with a 6-4 win over Czechoslovakia at the Met Sports Center.

60 years ago (1961)

(Adv.) Now seen at the Brainerd Theater, see Debbie Reynolds and Andy Griffith in The Second Time Around. On Saturday there is the Kiddies Show, a double game with “Forest Rangers” and “Tarzan the Magnificent” plus five cartoons. Next Sunday it’s Jerry Lewis in “The Errand Boy”.

80 years ago (1941)

Men in the armed forces who are home on vacation receive some free gifts from local vendors. Three free bowling games in the Lake Region Lanes, free tickets to Paramount and Brainerd Theater, free cleaning in Meyer Laundry, free Brainerd Bus rides, free dance and dinner with the Service League at Club LaGuyal on December 26th.

100 years ago (1921)

Brainerd’s new municipal ice rink will officially open to the public on January 2nd with a special inauguration program organized by Carl Wright. When the rink is completely flooded, it measures 350 square feet. The well-lit warm house measures 16 x 26 feet.
