“There are lies, damn lies, and then there are statistics.” Netflix has released an official trailer for a new documentary series with the full title: Web of Make Believe: Death, Lies, and the Internet. This is the latest Tech Doc creation from an acclaimed filmmaker Brian Knappenbergerwho has created a handful of excellent documents over the internet: We Are Legion: The Story of the Hacktivists, The Internet’s Own Boy: The Story of Aaron Swartzand Nobody speaks: Trials of the Free Press. This time he takes on misinformation and the erosion of truth through the internet – split into six episodes on different topics. “Conspiracy. Fraud. Force. Murder. What starts out virtual can become real all too quickly – and when the internet is global, so are the consequences.” Rich with distinctive characters and surprising developments, reality is warped as the ordinary American household collides with a chaotic web of misinformation. I’m glad Knappenberger cares because he knows the web better than anyone, but I just hope that telling these stories actually makes a difference. Because it gets pretty dark here. we Everyone need to wake up and start fixing the problems.
